They’ve done it before, and they’re doing it again this year. Ready for a classic favorite and guaranteed-to-please house? Enter Universal Monsters: Legends Collide. Universal Studios has announced a house that focuses on three of their oldest monsters and has them pitted up against one another in a face-off.
Released in 1931, Dracula was the first sound film adaptation of the vampire’s story. The movie, of course, was produced and distributed by Universal Pictures, and starred Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula. His performance made the character a cultural icon, and the archetype for future depictions of vampires.
The Mummy was released 90 years ago, just a year after the success of Dracula. It’s one of the most classic horror films of all time, and certainly a groundbreaking story that shaped early cinema as a whole. Boris Karloff stars in this pre-code film as the title character, and the movie was created at the height of American interest in Ancient Egyptian history. King Tut’s tomb had been excavated in 1922 by Howard Carter, and the concept of an Ancient Egyptian “curse” had a decade to fester itself into mainstream culture.
The Wolf Man was released in 1941 and stars Lon Chaney, Jr. Surprisingly, this was the second werewolf film released by Universal Pictures. Werewolf in London had been released in 1935, and while it wasn’t as commercially successful as The Wolf Man, the film did the legwork in establishing werewolf lore as part of the Universal Monsters. Audiences loved the juxtaposition of being terrified by a story they also empathized with, and the tragic story arc of the werewolf plight has appealed to people for centuries.
Guests at Halloween Horror Nights 31 can expect an epic battle between The Wolf Man, The Mummy, and Dracula on their mission to find that amulet needed to break their curse.
Who will win, and who will be the guest favorite? The answer might not be the same. Halloween Horror Nights 2022 will run select nights between September 2 and October 31.
